If you ask me, every girl needs a pair of Dr. Martens in her closet!
Docs have been given a rebellious, nerdy, or even unfashionable rep at times (think The Princess Diaries!) but that has really changed– not that I particularly mind the first two of those three stereotypes anyway! They are a staple in most models’ wardrobes; in fact, one of the VS Angels once even named them one of her closet essentials.
(I totally just tried to find that interview, but couldn’t… Lmk in the comments if you happen to know the one I’m talking about, or which Angel it was! I’m like 99% sure it happened haha.)
Anyway, the Dr. Martens Flora Chelsea boot quickly became a staple item for me! I’ve paired these beauts with everything from the grittiest bad girl vintage looks to chicer, streamlined outfits like this one. I’ve worn them with little black shorts in the summer, jeans in the winter, and everything in between. If you don’t yet have a pair, I promise they are a worthy investment!
I was also excited to find this faux suede skirt and heathered V-neck both on extreme sale. I’m always looking to add more classic neutrals to my closet, and H&M is one of my longtime favorite retailers!
I was actually there for the grand opening of the first American H&M. I was in middle school and my family lived in Boston at the time. My mom, who’s originally from Germany, was so excited that one of her favorite European stores had come to the States! It was such a fun day!
Wearing big hoop earrings surprisingly felt like a fashion risk for me. I guess it’s because I almost never wear hoops. I figured a cute six-pack from Forever 21 with multiple sizes would be a good way to test out how I liked them on myself. These are a really thin rope texture, which I love!
I used the Stila lip crayon in the color “Tangerine Dream,” which is one of my favorites. It’s a bit more orangey in real life than you can tell in these photos. Lighter orange lips had a major moment in 2014, but I think this color is red enough to not look dated. Plus I’m always an advocate of the, “If you like it, wear it!” mentality!
I finished my look with this awesome felt hat, a gift from my good friend Brit. Brit is a stylist and got it from The Wasteland, a consignment/vintage store in SF. One day when I was at her apartment, she pressed it into my hand and said, “I pulled this for a shoot and don’t need it anymore. You can rock it better than I can!” Brit is gorgeous and was being modest, but after a couple “Are you sure’s?” I couldn’t resist accepting the hat!
So Brit, if you are reading this, I hope I did your gift justice and got the stylist stamp of approval! 🙂
We are headed to Florida tomorrow for a wedding– the one I mentioned toward the end of this post. It’s a Saturday morning beach wedding, and I’m super excited!
Also stay tuned for the first installment of Maya’s Mid-Monthy Mashup on Friday! Kudos to my hubby for helping name it. I wanted it to alliterate and “Motivation” sounded like it would be specifically about working out or eating well, whereas I’m actually going to be talking about all my recent discoveries, from the amazingness of maca powder to the Oh Boy podcast to my first week of Latisse! I spent much of yesterday thinking about an all-encompassing roundup name and finally asked Stephen. Without a moment’s delay he goes, “Mashup?”
I hope everyone is having a fantastic week!
